After Moscow invaded Ukraine, countries are reducing their reliance on Russian energy, and Qatar has become an important supplier of liquefied natural gas to Europe. State-run energy giant Qatar Energy has signed long-term LNG supply deals with Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands.
Khadabi, who is also the chief executive of Qatar Energy, said EU legislation was unworkable for companies like Qatar Energy.
The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive has attracted criticism both within and outside the EU. Countries have until 2026 to translate the new rules into national law, and a year later, in 2027, the new rules will begin to apply to companies and be phased in over three to five years after taking effect.
The directive is part of the EU’s wider strategy to align business practices with the goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
The European Commission had no immediate comment when contacted by POLITICO.
