Seamer Matthew Potts replaces Chris Woakes in the only change from England’s third and final Test against New Zealand, which will take place at GMT It starts in Hamilton at 22:00 on Friday.
The 26-year-old Potts is making his 10th appearance for England and his second of the winter as England look to sweep the series 3-0.
Woakes took eight wickets in three Tests this winter, one of which was played on a poor surface against Pakistan in Multan.
“We see this as another opportunity to give our fast bowlers some more game time,” England captain Ben Stokes told BBC Sport.
“We’re looking forward to giving Portsea a chance to play. He’s been training really well. Hopefully he can transfer that training into the game.”
Durham’s Potts took 31 wickets in Tests at an average of 29. Taken off by Kane Williamson.
“He has a huge engine and he can play all day long and play a lot of overs,” Stokes said. “Not only that, he’s a very skilled pitcher.
“With a 2-0 lead, we’ve put ourselves in a position where it’s easier to make changes. We want to give experience and opportunities to people who don’t always get opportunities.”
The 35-year-old Woakes has a notoriously poor record on the road, averaging nearly 49 points per game while averaging 21.6 points per game at home.
But he made important interventions this winter, including crucial wickets in the first Test against Pakistan in Multan and against New Zealand in Christchurch.
“Chris Woakes was very effective for us on our winter tour,” Stokes said. “There was a lot of focus on his away record but a lot of people were proven wrong.”
