An Indian actor has been arrested for attending a movie screening where a large crowd of fans allegedly led to the death of a woman, police and local media said.
This month, huge crowds gathered at a cinema in the southern city of Hyderabad to catch a glimpse of Allu Arjun, who came to watch his film “Pushpa 2: The Rule.” of screening.
The 42-year-old actor was arrested on suspicion of three offences, including intentionally using a dangerous weapon or means to cause harm, an unnamed police officer told AFP.
Seven more people were arrested, the official added.
A video shared on X by broadcaster TV9 showed the actor holding a coffee cup at home and talking to police officers who came to arrest him.
The victim of the Dec. 4 crash was a woman in her 30s, and her son was also seriously injured.
According to India Today, the woman’s family later lodged a complaint against Arjun, his security team and the venue management.
Arjun said he was “very sad” two days after the incident.
“While respecting their need for space to grieve, I am committed to providing all possible assistance to help them through this challenging journey,” he wrote on X.
Arjun is very popular in South India and the Pushpa film series has also been a huge commercial success.
He won the Indian National Film Award for Best Actor for his lead role in the first installment of the series, released in 2021.
